This exciting research shows that contrary to a traditional opinion, upon low pH exposure the influenza virus is capable of releasing its genetic material spontaneously, as opposed to relying on being in the cell enclosed in the newly absorbed (endocytosed) vesicle. This research is all thanks to developments in the latest imaging techniques with the researchers in this study capable of isolating and viewing structural changes in a single virion. This is something that is only becoming possible now and shows the importance of molecular imaging in the development of our virological knowledge!
